Washington Phillips - Mother's Last Words to Her Son

about

Washington Phillips (1880-1954) was an American farmer, unordained or "jackleg" preacher, and gospel musician. He accompanied himself with a strange stringed instrument known as a "celestaphone" or sometimes a "dolceola". He recorded this haunting beautiful piece in the late 1920s for Columbia Records. The song was saved from obscurity and recently rediscovered by being featured prominently in the 2011 film "We need to talk about Kevin"
